A European or East Asian species of grape vine, the only one of 32 Vitis Species that gives uniformly good wine. The name literally means ‘wine bearer’  and was originally native to the Transcaucasia region on the eastern shores of the Black Sea. The vines were transported throughout the ancient world and are now grown in nearly every temperature zone where they are suited.
